Short Summary:
- A massive fire broke out at the pet section of Chatuchak Weekend Market.
- Hundreds of caged animals perished, including puppies, snakes, and birds.
- The cause of the fire is under investigation, with electrical faults suspected.
In the early hours of Tuesday, a catastrophic fire erupted in the pet section of Bangkok’s Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of Thailand’s most renowned tourist destinations. The blaze claimed the lives of hundreds of caged animals, such as puppies, fish, snakes, and birds. Authorities reported that approximately 100 shops were affected by the fire, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.
The Bangkok government confirmed that it took firefighters about an hour to bring the inferno under control. Fortunately, there were no human casualties reported. However, Thai media outlets indicated that the fire caused the deaths of several hundred animals confined within the shops.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the site once the fire was extinguished. He said,
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of these animals. Our team is working diligently to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the damage.”
According to local authorities, the fire’s origin is currently under investigation, with some speculating that an electrical fault may have been the cause.
One local vendor reported to the media that the blaze appeared to have started at a shop where electric fans were left running overnight to keep animals cool in Bangkok’s extreme heat. This aligns with the initial observations by police inspector Tivakorn Prongseng, who noted that the fire began in the ornamental fish zone of Srisomrat Market, adjacent to Chatuchak.
The State Railway of Thailand owns the market, and it has witnessed similar incidents in the past. Previous fires in the densely packed Chatuchak market have sparked concerns about safety and infrastructure standards. Efforts are now underway to estimate the total cost of the damage and organize compensation for the affected shop owners.
Conservation organizations have frequently raised alarms about the conditions and ethical standards of the pet section in Chatuchak Market. Allegations of illicit trafficking of rare and endangered species such as turtles, tortoises, and birds have put certain vendors under scrutiny.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has established a presence at the scene to assist shop owners and gather information. The administration’s emergency unit 911 reported that the fire ravaged about 1,300 square meters (14,000 square feet) of the market. “Lots of pet animals” were affected, as stated by local authorities in a report.
Several vendors like Suwannee Sangdee, who owned a shop selling Siamese fighting fish, faced heartbreaking losses. She said,
“I’m in shock. I feel like crying, but there are no tears. My entire establishment and all my fish are gone.”
Many other vendors share similar sentiments as they grapple with the devastation.
Emergency services have been working tirelessly to rescue any surviving animals from the charred shops. Governor Chadchart urged the public to assist by offering temporary housing to the animals that survived the fire. “We need a collective effort to help those affected by this tragic incident,” he added.
This fire has highlighted significant gaps in safety protocols within one of Bangkok’s key attractions. As investigations continue, authorities and wildlife groups are calling for more stringent regulations to prevent future tragedies. In the meantime, community support and recovery efforts are crucial to rebuilding the lives of the affected shop owners and the surviving animals.
